Chicago’s Cook County Commissioner: Part Two—An Inside Look within the Office

Part Two of Dan's feature as the The Leadership Institute's Graduate of the Week.

Illinois' Cook County Commissioner Dan Patlak, last week's Leadership Institute graduate of the week, leads his 19 staff to work as "taypayer advocates" for the 1.7 million people he represents.

The Cook County Board of Review is a quasi-judicial board that helps respond to "taxpayer's grievances with their property tax assessment," Brendan Seyring, a staffer for Commissioner Patlak, said.

A second highlight: Cook County has met the tax bill filing deadline of July 1 for the first time in 34 years, Brendan said.

"For every month delayed, it costs the county millions of dollars," Brendan said. "We are on time this year because of all the hard work and overtime."

From The Leadership Institute - Chicago’s Cook County Commissioner: Part One - About the Man

Commissioner Dan Patlak was recently featured as The Leadership Institute's Graduate of the Week.

Dan Patlak is a politico.

He's held campaign posts from volunteer campaign manager for a state representative race to press secretary on a U.S. Senate campaign. He's even run for office himself.

In 2010, Dan was elected as a Commissioner at the Cook County Board of Review in Illinois. He represents one-third of his county's population.

Illinois' Cook County includes 946 square miles and represents 5.3 million people, making it the "second most populous county in the nation and the 19th largest government in the United States," according to the Cook County, Illinois webpage. This county includes the City of Chicago and the suburban municipalities surrounding it.

Sean Morrison's sleazy ads

Every election cycle, one candidate runs a campaign more brazenly misleading than all the rest. Two years ago, Todd Stroger loyalist Joseph Berrios, a Democrat, won a race for Cook County assessor by falsely implying that if elected he could help "freeze property taxes."

Sean Morrison, a failed candidate that year for Cook County Board of Review, must have been taking notes when Berrios was spouting fiction. Morrison is back this year, challenging incumbent Republican Dan Patlak, who beat him in the 2010 GOP primary and then reclaimed what had been a Democratic seat on the Board of Review. This three-member panel, which hears appeals to assure that assessments are uniformly calculated, doesn't set your tax rates; that's the job of school districts, municipalities and other local governments. Yet Morrison's literature trumpets the patently phony message that a vote for him will "Lower Our Property Taxes Now!"

This race is rooted in nothing more noble than a feud between competing factions of Cook County Republicans. In endorsing Patlak for re-election, we wrote that Morrison evidently knows there is no reason to unseat Patlak: Morrison has built his campaign not on Board of Review issues, about which his knowledge is demonstrably limited, but instead on serial mudslinging that speaks poorly of his judgment — one of this job's core necessities.

Successive Morrison ads and mailers spouting his nonstop smears of Patlak further convince us that voters should keep Morrison far away from this low-profile but crucial office.

Bill Brady Endorses Dan Patlak

In Tuesday's Republican primary, our nomination for a powerful and important office is at stake. It's Commissioner of the Cook County Board of Review. Our Republican incumbent is Dan Patlak. I ask you to join me in supporting Dan.

Dan was elected in 2010 and is the first Republican to beat an incumbent Cook County Democrat in fifteen years. He has an admirable record in office, pushing for new transparency and efficiency standards and saving tax dollars. The Tribune and the Daily Herald both endorse Dan, as I do today.

Dan is a hard-working and vigorous advocate for the taxpayers. His character, integrity and energy are unquestioned. We need to support officeholders like Dan who have kept their promises and tightened government's belt.

I ask you to support our exceptional Republican Commissioner Dan Patlak on March 20 if you live in Cook County.

For good government and for the Republican Party – vote Proudly for Patlak, and please remind your friends and neighbors to vote for Dan too.

-Bill Brady

Joel B. Pollak Endorses Dan Patlak

Dear friends,

In 2010, one of the bright spots for Republicans in Cook County was the victory of Dan Patlak in the race for Cook County Board of Review. After months of hard work, Dan unseated an incumbent Democrat and restored balance to the property tax appeals process, bringing qualifications and experience to the office.

Now Dan is facing a Republican challenger in the primary, but after two years of solid service, there's no clear reason to replace him. Dan has has received numerous endorsements and will be the strongest candidate to maintain a balance of power for the benefit of Illinois taxpayers.

For that reason, I'm happy to pass a message along on his behalf. You can learn more at http://www.electpatlak.com.

Thank you!
